Are Expensive Fishing Reels Worth It? Here's What We Think.
At Saltwater Edge, we believe in investing in the gear that elevates your experience on the water—and when it comes to spinning reels, the right one becomes a trusted companion for years to come. In this post, we’re spotlighting four high-end saltwater spinning reels that we stock because we believe they’re worth every penny.
These are the reels we reach for, recommend, and rely on—each representing the top-of-the-line from some of the best manufacturers in the game.
1. Van Staal VR Series
Price: Starting at $639
Best For: Northeast surfcasting, all-around versatility

The Van Staal VR series stands out as the best bang for your buck in the premium reel world. Fully sealed, built from high-grade aluminum, and surprisingly lightweight, the VR series delivers unmatched performance and durability.
This is the reel you can beat up season after season—and it keeps coming back for more. It even includes a bail-less conversion kit and upgrade options like a power knob. Eric’s personal favorite? The VR75 in black.
2. Tsunami SaltX 2
Price: Starting at $399
Best For: Surfcasters on a budget who still want full sealing

Tsunami listened to feedback from the original SaltX and rebuilt this reel from the ground up. The result? A fully sealed, rugged reel with thoughtful features like a water-evacuating bail mechanism and a replaceable titanium spool lip—great for rocky environments.
Lightweight, budget-friendly, and available in sizes up to 8000, this reel offers huge value. Plus, it’s easy to convert for lefties.
3. Daiwa Saltiga
Price: Starting at $949
Best For: Offshore power, silky smooth operation

If you’re looking for next-level smoothness, the Daiwa Saltiga delivers. With mag-sealed bearings, monocoque body construction, and an oversized internal gear system, this reel combines strength and finesse like nothing else.
While it’s popular overseas for surf fishing, it’s catching on fast here in the States for inshore and offshore anglers who want serious torque and reliability. The drag is no joke—up to 66 pounds on larger models!
4. Shimano Stella SW
Price: Starting at $949
Best For: The angler who wants the absolute best

The Stella SW is Shimano’s crown jewel—and it shows. With Infinity Drive, X-Protect sealing, and a heat-dissipating drag system, this reel is designed to perform under extreme pressure, whether you’re jigging tuna or battling giants in the surf.
From the inshore 4000 size to the massive 30,000, the Stella SW is what you get when you want the very best saltwater spinning reel on the market.
So... Are They Worth It?
If you're the kind of angler who spends serious time on the water, the answer is a resounding yes. These reels aren't just tools—they're partners. With proper care, they’ll outlast the rest of your gear and deliver peak performance every time.

I’ve also got a bund of Mitchel Garcia 300,s from the 1960s. I’ve pared them with the old Rebel minows and caught many of schooling strip bass, between 22" to about 30’’, using 14 lb line, and fishing just after sunset. Mostly in the Town of Benicia, on the Carquinez Straights, California, where strip bass are everywhere this time of year, and going on untll late October. PS, I always pinch the barbs shut, for my own protection or that of someone fishing next to me. I’m heading to Martha’s Vineyard this fall, along with my fly rods and reels, and a spinning set up.
