Circle hooks are very popular in situations where fish might be prone to swallowing a bait whole resulting in a "gut" hook. This doesn't matter as much if you're planning to keep a fish, but it definitely reduces the chances of a safe release and since a fish may not be a "keeper" it's chances of survival swimming around with a hook in it's belly are greatly reduced.
A bonus with circle hooks is that for some species the corner of the mouth is a very secure spot to put the hook home on a fish resulting in fewer lost fish during the fight.
