John Field on Fly Casting Mastery: Skill Building at the Saltwater Edge Fly Fishing Expo

John Field on Fly Casting Mastery: Skill Building at the Saltwater Edge Fly Fishing Expo

What separates a good fly angler from a consistently successful one?

According to John L. Field — author, conservationist, and FFI Master Casting Instructor — it comes down to mechanics, discipline, and eliminating wasted motion.

At this year’s Saltwater Edge Fly Fishing Expo on March 14th, we’re shifting the focus. Last year emphasized tackle and tactics. This year is about skill building and the habits of successful fly anglers.

The Problem With Too Much False Casting

One of the biggest mistakes John sees?

Too many false casts.

Every extra cast wastes time. And time is what separates you from the fish.

  • Fish moving toward you close the distance
  • Fish moving away turn a 60-foot shot into 100
  • Extra false casts spook targets
  • You’re fly casting instead of fly fishing

Once the head is out and you’re in position, take the shot.

The Building Blocks of a Great Cast

John breaks casting down into fundamental mechanics:

  • A three-joint stroke: wrist, elbow, shoulder
  • Acceleration proportional to the amount of line past the tip
  • Tight loop control
  • Clean tracking without rotation errors

As you carry more line, you add leverage and eventually momentum using your core and lower body. But it starts with control.

Sunday Casting Clinic

The day after the Expo, John will host a hands-on casting clinic where anglers can:

  • Reduce false casting
  • Increase distance
  • Cure tracking faults
  • Build tighter, more efficient loops

Every improvement builds on the last.

Rigging & Leader Logic Clinic

John will also teach a rigging clinic covering:

  • Professional loop and nail knots
  • Blood knots and improved blood knots
  • Bimini twist
  • Lefty’s loop
  • Leader formulas for stripers, flats species, and bluefish

The goal is simple: leaders that prevent detection, maintain integrity under pressure, and properly turn over your fly.
