Hogy Heavy Minnow Jigs

Epoxy-bodied minnow jig. Casts through wind. Albie and bonito killer.

When the funny fish — false albacore, bonito, mahi off the rocks — are crashing on small bait and the wind picks up, you need a small-profile lure that still casts a mile. The Hogy Heavy Minnow Jig is a slim, weighted epoxy jig in the same family as the metals and tins you'd otherwise reach for: small profile that matches finger mullet and silversides, plenty of weight to push through wind, and a tight wobble that albies and bonito chase down on a fast retrieve.

Key Features

  • Heavy weighted epoxy construction — casts like a metal, slices wind
  • Small minnow profile matches finger mullet, silversides, peanut bunker, sand eels
  • Tight wobble on a fast retrieve is the action albies and bonito key on
  • Compact, dense body throws much further than soft baits of the same weight
  • 4 weights (1/2 oz through 2 oz), 6 colors covering natural and attractor patterns
  • Hand-built by Hogy in the USA

Rigging & Use

  • Cast cross-wind or quartering into the wind to reach feeding pods
  • Fast steady retrieve when albies and bonito are chasing small bait — the tight wobble is the trigger
  • Twitch-and-pause for stripers picking through bait on the surface
  • 1/2 oz is the everyday size; step up to 1 1/4 or 2 oz when wind picks up or fish are out farther
  • Fish it on a fluoro leader (20-30 lb) and a small snap or loop knot to let the body work

Why We Like It

When the wind picks up at Beavertail or the boats can't quite get to the busting fish, you need a small-profile lure that still casts a mile. The Heavy Minnow is one of the few epoxy jigs we can throw confidently in 15+ knots of wind that still looks like a small baitfish in the water. Sits in the bag right alongside Deadly Dicks, Hogy Epoxy Jigs, and Game On EXO Jigs — different profile, same job, and on the right day this one out-fishes all of them.
