An in-depth, multi-week virtual surfcasting seminar focused on mindset, conditions, and decision-making in the surf.
The Saltwater Edge has partnered with Frank Goncalves to deliver an exclusively online surfcasting seminar series built around how and why surf anglers succeed. With over 20 years of experience fishing the Northeast, Frank is one of the most respected voices in surfcasting clubs and shows. This virtual format allows for deeper, more nuanced discussions than a one-night talk. The series covers tides, structure, fish behavior, and the often overlooked mental side of surf fishing. There is no universal path to success in the surf, and this course is built around learning how to read situations and adapt. Classes will be at 6:30pm.
Week 1 2.18.2026 - Understanding What You’re Throwing The most thorough and comprehensive breakdown, from a plugs’ guts to gaining confidence in throwing it. Know what you’re throwing | Creating Confidence Plugs | Profile / Size | Color
Week 2 2.25.2026 - Water, Tides, Wind & Fish Behavior. We can’t control the conditions or fish behavior, but we can learn to read what is unfolding in front of us and respond in ways that increase our chances of success. Light Pollution | Problem Solving | Moon Phase | Tide Speed | Fish Don’t always have to eat
Week 3 3.4.26 - Mindset The psychology of surf-success. Success happens in the water but is formed off the water. Approach | Healthy Obsession | Going with your gut | Superstition | Adjusting on the fly Managing Expectations (Most PBs don’t come easy)
Week 4 3.11.2026 - Process of Elimination & Changes, Getting a better understanding, When to call it. Giving up on areas, switching tides. Cutting Ties with Spots | Learning New Patterns | Good Habits | Making seasonal goals and themes (not nightly or you might get discouraged)
Classes will be held via Zoom, Zoom invites will be sent out the day of the first class.
This series goes beyond where to stand and what to throw. It digs into how experienced surfcasters think, adjust, and manage expectations over time. The multi-week format allows ideas to build naturally and makes this one of the most thorough surfcasting seminars we have seen.
