Captain Ben Whalley is a master fly tyer and guide who is best known for his incredible work with bucktail. Ben spends much of his year taking clients out in the beautiful Gulf of Maine where they sight fish for big stripers in the backwaters and flats. A student of Bob Popvics himself, Ben has refined his hollow tying skills to create jaw dropping beast fleyes and other large profile patterns. His flies are both works of art as well as big fish magnets. His class will take you through the nuance of hollow tying and building huge profiles with bucktail.
"There is no denying the brilliance Bob Popovics unlocked when he developed the hollow fleye which ultimately led to the BEAST Fleye. It is such a versatile pattern that allows tiers the ability to match a variety of larger prey around the world. I’ve had fun experimenting with tying these on shanks and mono, pure bucktail, or composite loops; each has its time and place."
Make no mistake; this is an advanced fly-tying class. To maximize student interaction, class size is limited. Ben has refined and tweaked many patterns to suit his fishing demands. This class will focus on tying techniques that can be applied to a variety of patterns. You will be taught the techniques that are useful in constructing big profile baits.
