Penn Spinfisher VII Spinning Reel

IPX5 sealed. Full metal body. HT-100 sealed drag.

The Penn Spinfisher VII is the seventh generation of one of the longest-running saltwater spinning reels in the business — a reel that's been the workhorse of charter captains, jetty rats, and surf rats for decades. IPX5 sealing means the gearbox and drag system stay protected when you get hit with a wave, dip the reel in the suds, or just let it ride home in the salt spray. HT-100 carbon fiber drag washers in a fully sealed spool deliver the kind of stopping power needed for tuna, big stripers, and trophy bluefish. Full metal body and sideplate keep the all-brass CNC gear system in precise alignment under heavy load. Available in sizes from 3500 (light inshore) to 8500 (offshore and big-fish surf), with Bailless (BLS) models for serious surfcasters who want to eliminate the one moving part most likely to fail at the worst moment.

Rigging & Use

  • 3500/4500: schoolies, fluke, light inshore
  • 5500/6500: the everyday Northeast surf reel — do-it-all class
  • 6500 BLS: same reel, no bail — pick this if you fish hard surf and want one fewer thing to fail
  • 7500/8500: heavy surf, trophy striper, light offshore work
  • Rinse with fresh water after every saltwater trip — IPX5 handles spray but salt buildup affects exteriors

Why We Like It

The Spinfisher line is the workhorse Penn has been refining for seven generations, and the VII is the best version yet. IPX5 sealing means you can fish hard without babying the reel. The HT-100 carbon drag is among the smoothest in the price range. Brass gears in a full metal body deliver the durability serious anglers expect from Penn. We point a lot of surfcasters who want sub-$300 build quality toward the 5500 or 6500 model — it's the answer to "what reel should I buy for striper fishing?" maybe more than any other reel we sell.
