Scientific Anglers SONAR Striper Intermediate Fly Line

1.25 ips sink rate. Short powerful head. Built for the striper-specific angler.

The Scientific Anglers SONAR Striper Intermediate is the Northeast-focused intermediate fly line built specifically for striped bass anglers. The short, powerful head loads quickly and delivers the biggest flies to the furthest targets, even in the wind that defines striper fishing along the Northeast coast. The full intermediate sink rate of 1.25 IPS gets your fly just below the surface where most stripers feed, and the short front taper means superior turnover even with bulky bunker patterns or large bucktail streamers. Built on a braided multifilament core for cold-water flexibility and durability. Four weights cover the full striper rod lineup from 7wt through 10wt.

Rigging & Use

  • WF-7: schoolie striper, lighter inshore work, smaller flies
  • WF-8: the everyday Northeast striper line — the workhorse
  • WF-9: bigger flies (5"+ bunker patterns), heavier rods, big-fish water
  • WF-10: trophy striper, jetty work, the biggest bunker imitations
  • Match line weight to your rod — if anything, run a half-size over if you're throwing big flies in wind
  • Watch for surface film clinging in spring — rinse the head between sessions

Why We Like It

SA makes a lot of intermediate lines, but the Striper Intermediate is purpose-tuned for what most of our customers actually do: throw big flies for big striped bass. The short head + short front taper combo is exactly the right design choice for our customers throwing 5-7" bunker streamers from a beach in 15 knots of wind. The WF-9 is the line we sell the most of — covers most serious Northeast striper scenarios at $99.
