Thank you to everyone who entered the Saltwater Edge Stock The Box Fly Tying Contest! We enjoyed all of your submissions and had a difficult time judging to decide the winner. In the end we focused on innovation and category execution, so the flies that met the category the best and were innovative.
On to the winners!
Sand Eels:
Winner: Matt Bauer
Matt's approach to a sand eel school caught our eye. It is a castable, well swimming example of a group of sand eels. It's not easy to execute this concept and this one was done great.
Runner Up:
Rosie from Rosie's Bait and Tackle
Rosie's mono extensions and overall execution of a sand eel was great. I think there's a lot of great things coming from Rosie!
Bunker:
Winner:
Matt Rooney, Ostrich and Bucktail Freestyle Fly
This flies use of ostrich to give life and motion to the fly was what won us over. I am also a sucker for natural eyes! This is a well tied example of what can be done with larger profiles.
Runner Up:
Peter Garrahan, Pheasant Tail Renegade Streamer
This fly reminded us of a salmon style streamer but it a very peanut bunker looking pattern. The use of feather to make up the body profile of the fly was done well, and not something we have seen often.
Crab Flies
Winner:
John Turney, Mole Crab Feather Back
This is a great example of using some traditional materials where they aren't always applied. We really liked the shell back and overall use of materials to make a very convincing mole crab.
Runner Up:
Chris Piatek, The Clapper Crab
We just know this monster crab fly would do great next to a piece of coastal structure. Really great use of elastic and foam to make the claws mobile and float.
Overall Winner:
Mark Fitzpatrick, Bunker School

This fly used some non traditional material to generate a realistic small school of peanut bunker, it looks castable and each individual bunker was executed very well.
